CFMOTO 1000MT-X: A Flagship Adventure Bike Built for Where the Tar Ends

The CFMOTO 1000MT-X brings 111 hp, KYB suspension and Brembo brakes to South Africa for R199,900. Who it is for, and how it compares with the 450MT and 800MT-X.

Some adventure rides end where the tar does. The CFMOTO 1000MT-X was built for the ones that start there.

Picture the trip South African adventure riders dream about: a few hundred kilometres of highway at 120 km/h to get out of the city, a mountain pass on loose gravel, a dry riverbed to cross, and a farm stall at the end of a long dirt road, with the next fuel stop a full tank away. That is the trip the 1000MT-X was built for. It is CFMOTO’s flagship adventure motorcycle, it arrived in South Africa in May 2026, and it brings a litre-class engine, fully adjustable KYB suspension and Brembo brakes to South African riders for R199,900.

Litre-class performance, without the litre-class price

Big adventure bikes are the flagships of almost every major brand, and they have always carried flagship prices. The 1000MT-X follows the same recipe as the bikes it rides against: a big twin, long-travel suspension, a 21-inch front wheel and a full set of rider electronics. Where it differs is the price. When Motorcycle News tested it in the UK, it found the bike costs thousands of pounds less than the established machines in its class, and the gap is just as clear in South African showrooms.

A litre-class twin with real punch

At its heart is a 946cc liquid-cooled parallel twin with eight valves, making 111 hp (83 kW) at 8,500 rpm and 105 Nm of torque at 6,250 rpm. It drives through a six-speed gearbox with a slipper clutch. On the road, that means strong, flexible pull from low in the rev range: you can sit in top gear at the national limit with power in hand for an overtake, and still climb a steep gravel hairpin in first without fuss. That reserve matters most when the bike is working hardest, two-up with luggage on the racks. Motorcycle News, which gave the bike four stars out of five, picked out the engine as its strongest point.

Built for gravel, not just for show

The 1000MT-X rides on fully adjustable KYB suspension: 48 mm upside-down forks up front and a KYB monoshock on an aluminium swingarm at the back, with up to 230 mm of travel at each end. Spoked wheels, a 21-inch front and an 18-inch rear, wear Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR tyres, as happy on corrugated gravel as they are on tar. Brembo takes care of stopping, with twin 320 mm front discs and radial calipers, backed by Bosch cornering ABS with an off-road setting. Bosch traction control has three settings, so you choose how much help you want when the surface gets loose.

The frame is chromoly steel. The bike weighs 222 kg ready to ride (199 kg dry), and its 22.5-litre tank sits low, which keeps the weight where you feel it least. For South African distances that big tank matters: on plenty of routes here, the next fuel stop is a long way off.

Comfortable for the long haul

Riders come in all sizes, so the seat sets at 830 mm or 870 mm, and the windscreen adjusts with one hand while you ride. An 8-inch colour TFT touchscreen supports wireless Apple CarPlay, and the riding modes, ABS and traction control can all be changed on the move, including an all-terrain mode for when the tar runs out. A steering damper above the handlebars keeps the front end calm over rough ground, and the lighting is LED all round. The bike comes in two colours, Tactical Green and Aerolite Grey.

Who it is for

The 1000MT-X is for the rider whose trips are measured in days rather than hours. If you tour with a pillion or with luggage, if your routes mix long highway stretches with gravel passes, or if you are planning Namibia or Lesotho and want a bike that will not leave you wondering whether it is up to the job, this is the MT to look at. It also suits the rider stepping up from a mid-size adventure bike who wants more in reserve, and the experienced rider coming off an older big-bore adventure bike who wants modern electronics without paying a premium for them.

It is a big motorcycle, though, at 222 kg with a seat of 830 mm or more. Newer riders, shorter riders and anyone who mostly rides tight, technical trails will be happier starting on something lighter, which is exactly why CFMOTO’s MT range has more than one bike in it.

Which MT is right for you?

The 450MT is where many riders start. At 185 kg, with a seat of 800 mm to 820 mm, it is the lightest and lowest of the three, and its 449cc twin makes 42 hp (31 kW): enough to tour comfortably, on a bike that stays easy to handle in deep sand and on tight two-track. It shares the 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wheel sizes of its bigger brothers, has KYB suspension with 200 mm of travel, and costs R125,900.

The 800MT-X is CFMOTO’s middleweight built for the dirt. Its 799cc twin makes 94 hp (70 kW) and 87 Nm, it has fully adjustable suspension with 230 mm of travel at each end, and it costs R180,900.

The 1000MT-X takes that idea further. It shares the 800MT-X’s wheel sizes, 230 mm of travel and 22.5-litre tank, and weighs just 2 kg more, but adds 17 hp, 18 Nm and Brembo brakes, for R19,000 more. If you ride two-up, carry luggage or spend long days on the open road, that extra muscle is where you will feel the difference.

What riders and testers say

Henri du Toit, a CFMOTO brand ambassador and founder of the Proudly Meerkat Adventure Rider group, rode the 1000MT-X on South African tar and gravel for Farmers Weekly. His verdict on the dirt was simple: “Off road, this bike is incredible.”

Overseas, the welcome has been just as warm. Adventure Bike Rider founder Alun Davies took one to Everest Base Camp, over some of the highest roads on Earth, and wrote that it “handled superbly under some very fast and testing conditions.” Motorcycle News summed the bike up as an affordable big hitter, “right up there with the best, for less.”

Price, warranty and servicing in South Africa

The 1000MT-X sells for R199,900 and comes with a four-year or 48,000 km warranty. The run-in service is at 1,000 km, and after that it needs a standard service every 15,000 km or once a year, so a rider covering big distances is not in the workshop every few months.

The best way to judge any bike is to ride it. CFMOTO has motorcycle dealers in all nine provinces, and one in Swakopmund for riders heading into Namibia: find the nearest on the CFMOTO dealer locator and ask about a test ride, and see the full specifications on CFMOTO’s 1000MT-X page. Then find a gravel road and see how far it takes you.
